Chapter 2: START
Posted July 28, 2014 at 7:31 pm

400x300-2

Welcome to Chapter 2 of Clique Refresh! If you are coming here for the first time, maybe head over to the first comic and read from the beginning. Maybe that would be a good thing to do. If you're a continued reader then just know I love you. I wish I could pet you while you read the comic and then we could talk about games and growing up and all of those wonderfully horrible things about coming of age.

Chapter 2, like all chapters will, starts from the point of view of our pal Ellie. Last chapter had a lot of comics that took place in the video game, Ether Ruin, but after that streak, I am excited for a nice break. Time to show off some real world problems and experiences. After doing Cardigan Weather, I have to say my bread and butter is this kind of experience driven story. Not every page ends with a laugh nor does it end with a soul crushing disappointment, but my hope is through Ellie, we are able to experience something together. People often ask if I miss doing journal comics, and I do! Luckily, Clique Refresh lends itself to letting me take my own experiences, and strip away a lot of my personal baggage attached to it. It's surreal to see people reacting to something Ellie went through, and then still feel as though it applies to me.

I look forward to showing off more of the title plot, and taking brief breaks into the game world now and then. Thank you so much for your support through the first Chapter and 7 months of Clique Refresh! Stay tuned~

My Lost Friends: Episode 1
Posted April 22, 2014 at 12:51 am

MyLostFriends

My Lost Friends is an ongoing series about friends I made as a youth that I remember years after we lost contact. Maybe these are just funny stories about what kids did on the Internet in the late 90's and beyond. Maybe these are cautionary tales that urge you to keep in contact with the people you care about. Either way, watch as I divulge horribly embarrassing memories.

Episode 1: Pan & Trunks

I spent a lot of my youth (late 90's mostly) doing my best to ignore the usual torments of middle school and instead focus on the important things in life: roleplaying Dragon Ball characters on AOL Instant Messenger. I used to have the awesome screen name 'SS Pan SS.' This wonderfully horrible moniker meant Super Saiyan Pan and then Super Saiyan again, like you didn't get it the first time. Listen, I for real wanted Goku's grand daughter to go Supes Sayo and SHE DID NOT. Not never. Still bumming. I also now realize having 'SS' in a screen name gives a completely different implication. Ah, youth!

My favorite friend I met via AIM Chat Rooms. Somehow or another we ended up talking one on one. I don't remember a thing about his screen name, but I remember our first ROLEPLAYING sesh (session) started with us playing Android 17 & 18. This proved to be dumb and the next time we played as Trunks and Pan. I don't even remember what the heck we Rped (roleplayed) back then, just having adventures, flying around, fighting things... ROleplaying honestly just constituted things like "[cocks head to the side and blinks] o_o;;;;;" I used to log on and just WAIT for him to sign on so we could RP these doofy Dragon Ball characters. I had a MEGA crush on Trunks, from the show, and Pan x Trunks became what we now call one's "OTP." I'm sure I probably had a crush on this guy at some point too but our characters never HELD HANDS if you know what I mean.

After awhile I found other people who RPed DBZ stuff. There was a guy who played Gotenks who lived in Pennsylvania. Another guy who played Dende. Maybe some other ones... Who knows. What I do remember is when I invited Trunks to RP with the other group, everything was awesome for a few weeks. They all hung out in a chatroom called the Happy Cafe (Pretty sure that's what they named it but this was over 10 years ago my god). We all logged some serious hours of fun during that time. After awhile, Trunks didn't seem like he was interested in Rping with me anymore. I think I was just not paying as much attention to our old adventuring ways and was spending a lot of time trying to get Gotenks to fall for Pan which LET ME TELL YOU seemed p important.

I lost track of Trunks somewhere, and I know I will likely never find that kid again. It's sad to think he is just gone, living out his life somewhere and I can't tell him how much fun I had during that time. Making up those stories and having that distraction from the bullying and garbage at my school really saved my life back then. He was friends with me when I had no one and even to this day, I can still say he was a very real friend to me. Whoever he was, whoever he grew up to be, wherever he ended up, he was a great friend and part of me will always miss him. To my first Internet Friend, and my first Lost Friend, I say thank you. If I could collect the Dragon Balls again I'd ask Shenlong for one more late night RP with you.

Let's Get Local
Posted February 25, 2014 at 4:16 pm

Clique Refresh is about all things near and dear to me; webs, friends, games, and of course my new home, Seattle. As I would like to feature as many of my favorite spots as possible in the comic, it might be helpful for me to point out just WHERE these great spots are, wouldn't it? I imagine Ellie won't be leaving her apartment too much, especially when that Seattle rain sets in, but when she does venture out, I'll do my best to inform you all about the IRL adventures you could be having too. Are you coming here on vacation? Are you a new transplant? Do you come through for a convention once a year? Maybe you are thinking about moving to a new city and haven't made up your mind? Well don't crowd up my city, but you can still enjoy these cool locations from afar. I know I did before moving here.

Today's comic The City Lights takes place up in Queen Anne. Not to be confused with Lower Queen Anne. In panel 1 we see Ellie strolling past what looks like the BEST ice cream chain around, Molly Moon's. You can find this ice cream at a lot of local eateries (Lil Woody's, wut wut!) and my favorite flavor is the Vegan Coconut Chunk. Seriously don't knock it until you chug a bucket of it. We then see our heroine come across a beautiful view of the city (dat Space Needle tho) and Mount Rainier from Kerry Park. I have shared some of the best friendship moments here as well as shed a few real tears watching the sunset light up our beloved volcano with pinks and purps. Seriously, if you can watch a sunset here you're pretty much all set. You can die fulfilled.

And that's it for now! Next time we see some landmarks I'll do my best to gush properly.

Many of you have contacted me about the RSS feed for the site. Thank you for the feedback! I like to hear what you all want to see more of. I assure you I am working on combining both the news posts and the comic updates into one feed, I just gotta beep boop these webs and flip flap the rotary girder. I'm clearly REAL good at this sort of thing. In the meantime, you can get comic update reminders through this feed! Wowee. Look at that nice feed. I'm so nice, I even made you this pretty Facebook page that you can like and see some bonus things on. It's so good, I mean you gotta like that. Who wouldn't like it? Chumps, that's who.

LAUNCH DAY
Posted January 30, 2014 at 7:16 am
It finally happened. I cannot believe the day is here... Clique Refresh has officially launched! You might hear a faint buzzing in your ears right now. No, that's not your tinnitus acting up, that's just me screaming at the top of my lungs. Thank you to everyone who backed the Kickstarter, helped me in the creation process, or kept me motivated to push through with this project. I couldn't be more excited to tell a story about Internet friendship, growing up, establishing oneself in a new city... well, I don't want to say everything just yet. I'll save the spoilers for another time. Take some time to bop around the site, the first update goes up at Midnight PST because I live in Seattle and you must bend to my timezone's will. The store will be implemented as soon as Kickstarter backers have their swag, so don't get your hopes up right now, but I already have designs in the works. Also, if you are one of the Chosen (a backer) head on over to the Thank You page to see your name in LIGHTS (pixels glorious pizzels). Thank you, for coming here and reading this. Truly, this comic is for you. Enjoy it.
